The garden was laid out in 1805 on the lands allocated to the university. With the participation of well-known university professors, hundreds of plant species brought from different parts of the world were acclimated in the garden. In 1808 the university astronomical observatory was opened, which continues to function to this day. In 1935 a monument to the great Ukrainian poet and artist Taras Shevchenko was erected here. Poet`s name, at that time, was also given to the garden. After the installation of the monument, the garden was reconstructed. Then new alleys, platforms and fountains appeared.
